Election 2022: What you need to know for the August primary in Central NY (One deadline today)

Election Day 2021 in Syracuse and Central NY

Voters cast their ballots Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021 focused on local elections and state proposal this year. N. Scott Trimble |strimble@syracuse.com

The second primary for this election year happens on Aug. 23, when voters will decide which candidates will be on the ballot for the November general election.

The June 28 primary decided which of the Democratic and Republican gubernatorial and state assembly candidates would be on the ballot on Nov. 8.

The August primary will include Democratic and Republican candidates for U.S. Congress and the New York State Senate in the various districts throughout Central New York.

In Onondaga County, there will be Republican and Democratic primaries in all districts, but only the City of Syracuse and some towns will have conservative primaries. In Cayuga County, there will only be Conservative and Republican primaries. In Madison and Oswego counties, there will be Democratic and Republican primaries.

Absentee voting

Registered voters may request absentee ballot applications by mail or email, they may be downloaded from the Board of Elections website or they can be requested in person. A registered voter may also request an absentee ballot via the state portal.

The deadlines for getting an absentee ballot for the Aug. 23 primary are:

  • Today (Aug. 8): Last day for the board of elections to receive an absentee ballot application by letter, telefax, or through the absentee request portal.
  • Thursday (Aug. 11): Last day to apply to change your party enrollment.
  • Aug. 22: Last day to apply in person for an absentee ballot.
  • Aug. 23: Absentee ballots must be postmarked by this date to be received no later than Aug. 30. Aug. 23 is also the last day that you may deliver a ballot in person to either the board of elections or to a designated poll site in your county.

Deadlines for the November election may be found on the state Board of Elections website.

New this year: If you vote by absentee ballot, you may not vote in person during early voting or on Election Day. In the past you could vote in person and election officials would not count the absentee ballot.
