Walt Shepperd, well-known in Syracuse as a long-time writer for the Syracuse New Times and leader of The Media Unit, has died, his family said.

Media Unit alumni announced his death in their Facebook group, with his daughter’s permission. The group said he died of complications from a stroke with his daughter by his side.

Shepperd ran the nonprofit teen performance and production group, which ran a stage and television production studio, until 2019. His aim was to transform young people through the arts.

Shepperd also worked as a feature writer columnist and senior editor for the Syracuse New Times for 35 years.

The Media Unit, headquartered in downtown Syracuse, presented entertainment for teens and tackled topics such as racism, school shootings, gang violence, mental health, and adolescence. His performers often presented shows for free around the city and at the Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival.

Syracuse City Mayor Ben Walsh tweeted: “Syracuse has lost a legend. Walt touched so many lives through his writing and his transformative work with our city’s youth at the Media Unit. We will miss him dearly. RIP.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
