Syracuse, N.Y. -- A Syracuse man stabbed a 24-year-old repeatedly with a pair of scissors during a fight near an elementary school Monday night.

Around 10:53 p.m., police responded to a reported stabbing at 123 West Corning Ave., near McKinley-Brighton Elementary School, according to a news release from Syracuse police.

A 24-year-old man was found outside the home on West Corning Avenue with multiple stab wounds, police said.

The man had been stabbed repeatedly with scissors in the neck, head, back and hand, police said.

The suspect was identified and found inside the residence, police said. Cairo Mitchell, 31, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Police discovered the two men, who both live at 123 West Corning Ave., got into a fight and Mitchell began stabbing the 24-year-old. The cause of the fight is unclear, police said.

The 24-year-old victim was rushed to the Upstate University Hospital where he is expected to survive, police said.

Mitchell is currently being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center. He previously served three years in state prison for third-degree robbery, according to State inmate records. He was released in 2019.
