Syracuse, N.Y. -- Anthony Q. Davis Sr. will be the Syracuse school district’s interim superintendent.
The city school board voted tonight to make Davis, who retired in 2019 as an assistant superintendent in the district, the temporary district leader while the city searches for a new superintendent.
Davis graduated from Henninger High School and started his career there in 1987 as a teaching assistant. Later he was a special education and an administrative intern in the district. Davis went to work for the Liverpool school district for 19 years before returning to the city, where he was the assistant superintendent of secondary education, career and technical education program from 2016 until his retirement.
Davis’ will take over the leadership of the city school district July 1. Current Superintendent Jaime Alicea is retiring at the end of June.
“As a graduate of the Syracuse City School District myself, I am fully invested in our students’ success. Having worked as an SCSD Assistant Superintendent, I fully understand the challenges facing our students, families and staff and I believe that together we are more than capable of overcoming them,” Davis said in a statement.
School Board President Dan Romeo said Davis’ previous tenure with the city district made him uniquely qualified to take over.
“As a graduate of the District and a former SCSD employee, he is the perfect person to lead us through this interim period as we continue our search for a permanent superintendent,” Romeo said.
The board is hiring a consultant to lead the search for the new superintendent of the district, which serves more than 20,000 students. The deadline to have a new superintendent in place is January 2023. Alicea, who has been in the district his entire 39-year career, made $228,347 in 2020. He has been superintendent for six years.
