See top baby names for US boys, girls in 2021

American parents stuck with the familiar when it came to the most popular baby names in 2021.

Olivia and Liam were the top baby names last year, according to the Social Security Administration’s annual ranking of most popular names. It was the fifth year in a row Liam was the top choice for boys and the third year Olivia was first for girls.

The rest of the list was mostly unchanged as well. Only one new name entered: Theodore replaced Alexander in the top 10.

Below are the top 10 lists for girls and boys.

Girls:

  1. Olivia
  2. Emma
  3. Charlotte
  4. Amelia
  5. Ava
  6. Sophia
  7. Isabella
  8. Mia
  9. Evelyn
  10. Harper

Boys:

  1. Liam
  2. Noah
  3. Oliver
  4. Elijah
  5. James
  6. William
  7. Benjamin
  8. Lucas
  9. Henry
  10. Theodore

The administration also tracks the names gaining the most popularity each year. The top five in that category for boys included Amiri, Eliam, Colter, Ozzy and Loyal. For girls: Raya, Wrenley, Angelique, Vida and Emberlynn.

The administration began compiling its baby name list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880. The agency gathers the data when parents apply for children’s Social Security cards.

Lists of most popular names in each state for 2021 will be released May 12.
