As Juneteenth celebrates its second year as a federal holiday, the Upstate New York city Harriet Tubman called home is planning many celebrations for 2022.

Designated as an official holiday for the first time in New York State on June 19, 2021, Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. After escaping slavery herself, Tubman moved to Auburn, NY and was an integral part of the Underground Railroad, helping to bring more than 300 enslaved people to freedom.

In commemoration of her legacy and Black and African American achievements, the city of Auburn is planning a weekend long schedule of events for Juneteenth, beginning June 16.

New for this year is the Juneteenth gala on June 17 and parade on June 18. The parade will be taking off at the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center, walking down the Historic South Street Area Historic District past the Harriet Tubman home to the Booker T. Washington Community Center.

The Harriet Tubman National Historical Park will lead free 10 a.m. “Hike Through the History of Tubman” walking tours Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of that weekend from the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center. If you’d like to ride through history, the National Park Service and Seward House Museum will be offering free trolley tours on June 18, passing by the Seward Mansion, Seward Park, Tubman and Seward gravesites, Tubman’s church, and the historic Black neighborhood.

Auburn is also planning a local bicentennial celebration to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Harriet Tubman’s birth. Currently, both the Seward Home and the Cayuga Museum of History and Art will have displays centering around Tubman and her time in Auburn. There are additional events featuring music, comedy, and a traveling sculpture exhibit through the city.
