Syracuse, N.Y. -- Four Eastwood parks are getting facelifts, starting this summer.
The improvements will bring a splashpad, a 3-point shot basketball court, an updated skate park and a new playground to the neighborhood.
The improvements were announced today. The park and splashpad improvements will cost a total of $650,000.
The splashpad will be baseball-themed at Cummings Field, an underused baseball field in on Edtim Road in the city. The estimated completion is anticipated for the fall, or spring 2023.
Norwood Park on Ashdale Avenue will be getting a new playground with slides, swings and climbing structures. The playground is expected to be done by the end of this summer.
Huntington Park will be getting a new, 3-point shot basketball court. It’s the first of its kind in Central New York and Syracuse, according to the city. There will be different rim heights so people of all ages and skill levels can play. It’s expected to be complete by the end of fall or beginning of spring.
The East Woods Skate Park will get a makeover. That will be funded with $200,000 in grant money sponsored by state Sen. Rachel May, R-Syracuse. The park is still being designed and will expand on the current set-up and accommodate BMX bikers and roller skaters, along with skateboarders. That will be completed in summer 2024.
Mayor Ben Walsh said the plans for the parks are based on input from the neighborhood about what residents wanted. The city is also planning to upgrade North Side parks using same neighborhood input model. Those improvements will be funded with American Rescue Act money.
