Edward Wilson was Syracuse’s first Black letter carrier and stirred pride in his community

Edward Wilson

This photo of Syracuse letter carriers was taken sometime in 1881 at the old Bastable block near Hanover Square, where the State Tower Building is today. Edward H. Wilson, seated at the far right of the second row, was the first Black letter carrier in Syracuse, and one of the first in the United States.

The photo above shows a group of Syracuse letter carriers, believed to have been taken in 1881 at the city’s old post office, where the State Tower Building is today.

Clad in their gray uniforms, many of them sporting bushy whiskers and long mustaches, they gathered to have their photo taken after completing their rounds.
