Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse basketball center Jesse Edwards fractured his left wrist during Tuesday night’s game at Boston College and will be out for the rest of the season, the university announced today.

Edwards injured the wrist at some point during the game. Afterward, he told SU athletic trainer Brad Pike about the soreness he felt in the wrist. It was subsequently x-rayed and found to be fractured.

Coach Jim Boeheim said he believed the injury happened late in the game, right before Edwards fouled out.

SU has yet to determine a course of treatment for the wrist injury, though he will not play again this season. He likely will need surgery on his left, non-shooting wrist.

Edwards had been having a fantastic season in this, his third year in the SU program. The news is devastating for both Edwards and for his team, which has won four straight games and is trying to position itself for a potential postseason run.

Edwards averages 12 points and 6.5 rebounds for a Syracuse team that has relied on his significant improvement since a season ago. He’s shooting .695 overall and leads the team in blocked shots at 67.

His 127.6 offensive rating ranks 37th nationally (kenpom.com). He gets to the free-throw line at a higher rate than any other teammate and his shooting percentage ranks 20th nationally. His block percentage ranks 13th nationally.

Edwards is a junior academically but still has two more college basketball seasons available to him after this year because of the additional year the NCAA has allocated to athletes for Covid-19 disruptions to last season.

Edwards was limited to 13 minutes in that BC game because of foul trouble. Frank Anselem played the bulk of his minutes in the middle. Bourama Sidibe has had his own history of injury at center and has played a total of eight minutes this year. Sidibe’s trouble is with his knees.
