Lake effect snow has dumped heavy snow in some areas of Central New York, but where does Syracuse stand in the annual competition for the snowiest Upstate city?

Answer: Not very high in the rankings.

Syracuse is third out of the five cities, with 34.4 inches, according to the annual Golden Snowball competition. Our average snowfall at this point in the winter is normally 68.1 inches.

The cities beating Syracuse are Buffalo (60.4 inches) and Rochester (44.4 inches). Syracuse is ahead of Binghamton (33.6 inches) and Albany (12.8 inches).

For the 2020-21 winter, Syracuse ended the season in third place in the competition and sixth place in the annual Golden Snow Globe (25 snowiest U.S. cities) competition.

The all-time season record snowfall for Syracuse was 192.1 inches in the winter of 1992-93.
