Trooper and another driver injured in I-481 crash in Cicero, state police say

Cicero, N.Y. — A state trooper and another driver were injured in a two-car crash Wednesday on northbound Interstate 481 in Cicero, troopers said.

Trooper Stephen P. Muller was in his car with his emergency lights on, providing traffic control for a previous crash at Exit 10 (Circle Drive and North Syracuse), when he car was rear-ended, according to a state police news release.

Laura J. Shelton, 55, of North Syracuse, was driving a 2017 Kia and didn’t see Muller’s car stopped in the left lane, troopers said. The Kia rear-ended the trooper’s car around 5:55 p.m.

Muller was taken to Upstate Community Hospital and later released, troopers said.

Shelton was taken to Upstate University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Her status Thursday afternoon was unknown.

Muller’s car had damage to the rear, according to the release. Shelton’s car had “heavy front-end damage,” said Trooper Jack Keller, a spokesperson for the state police.

Shelton was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time, Keller said.

The crash is under investigation.
