The Syracuse women’s basketball team entered Purcell Pavilion — an arena it’s never left victorious — and showed once again that it can compete with the best teams in the country, that is until the final 10 minutes of the game.

The Orange (8-10, 1-7 ACC) fell to No. 20 Notre Dame for the second time this season in a 83-62 loss despite a stat-stuffing performance from Teisha Hyman. The final score could be seen as misleading because it was a one-possession game during the last media timeout in the fourth quarter, but the Fighting Irish finished the game with a 20-6 run over the final five minutes.

Hyman, Syracuse’s leading scorer, found multiple ways to put the ball in the basket. She finished with a team-high 22 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals. Chrislyn Carr added 13 points and three rebounds. Alaysia Styles and Najé Murray both scored 11 points apiece.

Notre Dame (15-4, 6-2 ACC) held a narrow edge of five points heading into the fourth quarter, but Syracuse couldn’t stop Fighting Irish freshman Olivia Miles, who totaled 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Sonia Citron caused most of her damage inside with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Maya Dodson added 13 points and seven rebounds. Dara Marbrey hurt the Orange from distance with four 3-pointers, accounting for 12 points. By the time the game ended, Notre Dame held its largest lead of the game at 21.

The loss is Syracuse’s sixth straight, along with its sixth defeat this season at the hands of a nationally ranked opponent. The Orange’s lone win over a top-25 team occurred on Dec. 1 over previously ranked No. 18 Ohio State.

With the win, Notre Dame remains undefeated against Syracuse at home with an 18-0 record dating back to 1988. The Fighting Irish has also swept the season series between the two teams after beating the Orange 82-56 on Nov. 14, the same day Felisha Legette-Jack had her jersey retired in the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse has yet to win in the month of January and will try to avoid a winless month for the first time in program history since the 2005-06 season when Pittsburgh visits the Carrier Dome on Sunday (noon, ACC Network).
