Scam alert: No, police in Central New York aren’t selling shirts; don’t click on text message link

Scam alert

Both the Onondaga and Oneida county sheriff’s offices say they have been made aware of recent text messages circulating in the community falsely claiming they are selling shirts. Police say residents should not click on the link in the text, as it is a scam.

Syracuse, N.Y. — If you received a text message urging you to buy a shirt from your local sheriff’s office, don’t be fooled.

Onondaga and Oneida county sheriff’s offices turned to social media on Monday to warn residents of the text messages circulating in the community and say it’s a scam.

The text messages claim police are selling shirts and offer $10 off if you click on a link included in the message.

Both Onondaga and Oneida county sheriff’s offices say they are “NOT selling shirts” and added that “residents should not click on the link in the text, as it is a scam.”

Central New Yorkers aren’t the only ones getting these text messages. The Citrus, Indian River and Sarastota county sheriff’s offices in Florida last week warned residents of the same scam.

“Let us be the first to tell you this is NOT LEGIT,” Sarastota sheriff’s deputies wrote in a Facebook post Friday. “While $10 off t-shirts sounds cool, we’re definitely not selling any. Please disregard and delete! Stay safe.”
