Six more Onondaga County residents die of Covid-19 as cases, hospitalizations decrease

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Onondaga County reported today that six more residents have died of Covid-19, making this the deadliest week of 2022 so far.

The county updated its website with new numbers and provided no information on who died and where.

The new deaths bring the pandemic total to 998.

The county today confirmed 1,151 new cases of Covid-19, the greatest one-day total since Sunday. Overall, cases are trending downward: In the past seven days, the county has confirmed 7,315 cases, a 30% drop from the previous week.

There are 236 Covid-19 patients in the hospital today, a drop from this week’s high of 257. Of today’s hospitalizations, 46 are in intensive care, about the same as the rest of the week.

New cases across New York have dropped more steeply than in Onondaga County, falling 66% in several weeks.

The sharp decline in Covid numbers mirrors the experience of other areas that have seen surges in cases thanks to the highly contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus. The variant began to take hold in New York in December, and cases skyrocketed to record levels soon after.
