The Syracuse men’s basketball team traveled to Durham, North Carolina, to face the No. 6 team in the country and left with a disappointing 20-point loss to Duke inside Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday.
The Orange’s 79-59 loss was the program’s worst defeat to the Blue Devils in 17 meetings and the fifth consecutive loss to Duke.
Syracuse star Buddy Boeheim struggled with his shot, missing his first nine attempts before finishing with seven points and four rebounds on 2-of-15 shooting. After scoring 23 points against Clemson on Tuesday, Orange guard Joe Girard totaled seven points and five rebounds on 3-of-13 from the field.
Late in the game, Syracuse guard Symir Torrence suffered a sprained knee and exited the game. After the game, he said he did not believe the injury was serious.
Duke received 15-point performances from four players, including freshman forward Paolo Banchero, who finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Wendell Moore had 15 points, eight assists, six rebounds and two steals. A.J. Griffin was 5-of-9 from 3-point range and totaled 15 points and six rebounds.
The overwhelming loss had some Syracuse fans discouraged about the team’s hopes of making this year’s NCAA tournament.
