Syracuse, N.Y. — C.J. Hayes, a graduate transfer receiver from Michigan State, has joined the Syracuse football program ahead of the spring semester.
Hayes, who has been in Syracuse this week on a campus visit, posted the news on Twitter. He is the fourth transfer brought in by the Orange since the end of the season.
Classes start Monday at SU.
Hayes, 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, had 14 catches for 154 yards in 19 career games for the Spartans, with most of that production coming as a redshirt sophomore in 2019.
He did not play in 2020 because of a foot injury. He played safety and contributed on special teams last fall, appearing in six games for a Michigan State team that finished 11-2 and No. 9 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll.
Hayes’s position coach at Michigan State when he signed with the school was former Syracuse assistant Terry Samuel, whose now at Kansas.
The Orange is still hiring for a new receivers coach.
Hayes joins quarterback Dan Villari (Michigan), running back Juwaun Price (New Mexico State) and defensive back Bralyn Oliver (Louisville) as transfer additions heading into the 2022 season.
Hayes turns 24 in June and will be one of the oldest players in the Orange’s receiver room.
