State police identify trooper who shot man carrying sword and knife

Dolgeville, N.Y. — The New York state trooper who shot and killed a man in Herkimer County on Friday has been identified.

Andrew Gorinshek, who is assigned to Herkimer County and has worked as a trooper since 2017, was identified as the trooper who shot and killed Carson Dobson.

Dobson had broken into a home at 203 Mers Way at about 2 p.m. and stabbed a victim several times before troopers arrived, state police said.

Gorinshek, trooper Jennifer Greenwood and a Dolgeville police officer arrived and Dobson approached them with a knife and sword, state police said.

Dobson continued to approach the officers after he was repeatedly asked to drop the weapons, according to state police.

All three Tasered Dobson, but he continued to approach the officers while threatening them, state police said.

Gorinshek then shot and killed Dobson, state police said.

Dobson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police.

The state Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting.
