Man dies after crashing into utility pole during medical emergency in Syracuse, police say

Syracuse, N.Y. — A 71-year-old man was pronounced dead Thursday morning after he began suffering from a medical emergency and he crashed his vehicle into a utility pole, police said.

The single-vehicle accident was reported at about 10:12 a.m. in the 1200 block of Teall Avenue, Syracuse police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Malinowski said.

The medical emergency caused the man to lose control of the vehicle, drive off the road and crash into the pole, Malinowski said.

Officers found the man unresponsive at the scene, Malinowski said. The man was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Malinowski said.

A 70-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to Upstate University Hospital and is expected to survive, Malinowski said.

The identities of the two people in the crash were not immediately revealed by police.

The investigation into the crash is still active, Malinowski said.
