Seneca Falls, N.Y. — A fire broke out early Monday at an aluminum recycling plant, but investigators still aren’t sure how it started, officials said.

An employee at Scepter, the aluminum recycling plant in Seneca Falls, called 911 at 1:33 a.m. to report the fire.

Seneca Falls police and firefighters, as well as Waterloo, Fayette and Aurelius firefighters and North Seneca Ambulance, responded to the fire at 11 Lamb Road in Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls Fire Department District Chief Allen Larsen said.

A Seneca Falls police sergeant reported pallets on fire in a pit underneath the building. Firefighters arrived a short time later. The fire was under control in about 30 minutes after the initial 911 call, Seneca Falls police said.

“The fire was contained to the area of origin and was quickly extinguished,” Seneca Falls police said in an email.

No injuries were reported.

The cause remains under investigation, but both police and firefighters said the fire is not suspicious. Larsen added that the fire has been “deemed accidental.”

Scepter shut down for about a half-hour while the fire was going on, but returned to full operation after that, Larsen said.

Scepter is an aluminum recycling facility that operates 24 hours a day.
