Class of 2022 power forward Maliq Brown commits to Syracuse

Syracuse, N.Y. ― Maliq Brown, a 6-foot-9 senior at Blue Ridge School in St. George, Virginia, announced on Saturday that he had committed to Syracuse.

Brown made the announcement in front of a throng of family, friends and classmates at his school on Saturday afternoon.

As he made the announcement, Brown unzipped a gray sweatshirt to reveal an orange Syracuse T-shirt. He then donned a blue Syracuse cap with an orange block S.

Brown picked Syracuse out of a final list of five schools that also included Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Penn State and North Carolina State. Brown had also received scholarship offers from Miami, Wake Forest and Texas A&M.

Brown’s list of schools would suggest that he is a very underrated prospect with his three-star ranking.

Brown becomes the fourth player in the 2022 recruiting class to commit to Syracuse. He joins Justin Taylor, a 6-6 guard from Charlottesville, Virginia; Quadir Copeland, a 6-6 guard in the 2022 class. Copeland is a native of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; and Peter Carey, a 6-11 senior center from Northfield Mount Hermon School in Gill, Massachusetts.

Brown and Taylor played together a year ago on the Team Loaded AAU squad. Taylor is currently attending the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, along with Copeland.

Brown had received a scholarship offer from Syracuse last February. He took an official visit to the SU campus two weekends ago. He had revealed his top five schools earlier this week and then quickly ended the recruiting process with his announcement on Saturday.

Brown is a dynamic player, especially on the defensive end of the court where his athleticism and 7-foot-1 wingspan combine to make him a dangerous shot-blocker. He was listed at 210 pounds as a junior last year at Blue Ridge School.

The Blue Ridge School, which is located close to Charlottesville, boasts Aamir Simms (Clemson) and Mamadi Diakite (Virginia) among its recent standouts.

After getting the commitment from Brown, the Syracuse coaches are now waiting on a decision from Chris Bunch, a 6-7 forward who attends Wasatch (Utah) Academy. Bunch has said he will make his announcement on Oct. 31.
