Syracuse, N.Y. — Two more people in Onondaga County, a man and woman both in their 60s, died of Covid-19 over the weekend.

The woman had underlying conditions, Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said this morning on Twitter. The man did not.

A total of 783 people in the county have died since the pandemic began in 2020.

Two people died Friday as well. One was a man in his 70s and the other a man in his 80s.

The county reported three more deaths Tuesday afternoon. They were men in their 70s, 80s and 90s. All had underlying health conditions, McMahon said.

A total of 76 people are in local hospitals with Covid, down six from Friday. Another 23 people are in intensive care units, up two from Friday.

Hospitalizations are much higher than they were in the early summer when the total was under 20 for an extended period. But they remain far below the county’s all-time peak of over 300 reached last December.

New Covid cases are at levels not seen since last winter.

The county saw 284 new cases Saturday, 154 Sunday and 245 Monday. McMahon reported another 140 new cases Tuesday afternoon.

Cases have been spiking since July, although there are some signs they are starting to flatten. The county was seeing an average of 240 new cases a day Oct. 1. That dipped to 231 as of Oct. 11.

McMahon also gave an update today on the county’s surveillance testing program in schools. Between Oct. 4 and Oct. 8, the county tested over 2,700 kids and found 13 cases. That’s a positive test rate of 0.47%.

Over 130 schools participated. Eleven had one case and one had two positives.
