Syracuse, N/Y. — Two people died early this morning when their vehicle crashed into a fuel tank at the Syracuse airport, according to Syracuse police.

Police said the crash happened about 4:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Malden Road which runs along the south side of Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

Both people in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police have blocked off the scene.

There was no fire or explosion associated with the fuel tank crash, airport officials said.

The vehicle went through the fence line onto the secure area of the airfield, near Malden Road, said Jennifer Sweetland, an airport spokesperson. The vehicle struck an aviation fuel tank on airport property, which is still intact, she said.

Emergency responders remain on the scene.

The airport remains open and flight operations have not been impacted, she said.

The fuel tank is stationary, and no cleanup was necessary, she said.

The main passenger terminal is on the opposite, north side of the airport.

Police ask anyone with information about the crash to call the Syracuse Police Department at (315) 442-5200.
