Covid-19 claims 2 more lives in Onondaga County

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Covid-19 has taken the lives of two more Onondaga County residents, County Executive Ryan McMahon said Tuesday.

McMahon said in a tweet that two men -- one in his 50s and the other in his 60s -- have died from the highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Both men had “significant underlying conditions,” he said.

In total, 741 people have died from Covid-19 in Onondaga County since the coronavirus pandemic started in 2020.

McMahon said there were 119 new cases of Covid-19 in the county. Of those, 31% are believed to have contracted the disease from household members, he said.

The total number of active cases in the county stands at 1,007, according to McMahon.

The number of people hospitalized with Covid-19 fell from 96 to 91, with 23 people in intensive care units, he said. Twenty, or 87%, of the 23 people in intensive care units are unvaccinated, McMahon said.

The three Covid-19 vaccines approved by the Food and Drug Administration are safe and highly effective at protecting against serious illness and death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
