Syracuse, N.Y. -- Five people have died from Covid-19 in Onondaga County since Friday as hospitalizations neared 100, County Executive Ryan McMahon said Monday.

“It was a tough weekend,” McMahon said in a tweet.

Three people died in hospitals -- two men in their 60s and one woman in her 80s, he said. In addition, the state reported that two nursing home residents in the county died of the disease, he said.

Forty people have been admitted to the hospital with Covid-19 in the last three days, bringing to 96 the number currently hospitalized with the disease, according to McMahon. Of the 40 people newly admitted to the hospital, 27 were not vaccinated against the disease, he said.

Of the 96 people currently hospitalized with Covid-19, 23 are in intensive care units, he said. Twenty of the 23 are not vaccinated against the disease, he said.

The last time more than 96 people in the county were hospitalized with Covid-19 was on Feb. 13, when hospitals reported 101 Covid-19 patients.

McMahon said 575 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the county since Saturday, including 173 new cases on Monday.

A total of 739 people have died of Covid-19 in Onondaga County since the pandemic began in 2020.

McMahon has been urging people to get vaccinated. The three Covid-19 vaccines approved by the Food and Drug Administration are safe and highly effective at protecting against serious illness and death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The county executive said 312,724 residents of Onondaga County have received at least a first dose of vaccine, while 289,093 have completed their vaccine series. He said 80.3% of county residents 18 and older have received at least one dose of vaccine.

“The vaccine is our best tool in this fight,” he said. “Please be a credible messenger.”
