Syracuse, N.Y. — Mastermind, a retailer of urban streetwear, is now open at Destiny USA.
It’s the second location for Mastermind, which was started by Syracuse native Jamel Newsome. The first store is at 613 N. Salina St.
Newsome started the Mastermind brand while working as a DJ in Atlanta, according to Destiny. Through his work there, he connected with celebrities and began designing clothes for them, including Lil Durk, comedian Jess Hilarious, Cedric the Entertainer and more.
He eventually returned to Syracuse and began to focus on clothing full time.
Mastermind carries workout gear, runner sets, track suits, seasonalwear, accessories and a sneaker line. Newsome is also developing a line of children’s clothes.
The new store is located on Destiny’s second level, across from Crocs.
Several new stores are opening at the Destiny in the coming months, including Hugo Boss and Hobby Lobby. Canadian Fashion retailer Ardene opened last week.
The mall has also been hit by a serious of high-profile closings in recent months. Anchor tenants Lord & Taylor, J.C. Penney and Best Buy have all shut down and Destiny has lost multiple smaller tenants as well.
The property is struggling financially. The mall owes far more in debt than its most recent appraisal and its owners have hired attorneys and debt restructuring advisers.
