Editorial cartoons for Aug. 8, 2021: NY Gov. Cuomo under fire, vaccine mandates, CDC confusion

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is fighting for his political life after an independent investigation documented multiple instances of sexual harassment involving 11 women, and also a toxic workplace culture in Cuomo’s Executive Chamber. Editorial cartoonists made Cuomo the centerpiece of this week’s gallery, portraying him as taking advice from Bill Clinton, playing the victim, and as a coronavirus with hands instead of spikes.

Cuomo is hanging on despite calls from the White House on down for the three-term Democratic governor to resign. An impeachment investigation was already underway in the state Assembly; it is now being accelerated.

Cuomo denied he had touched anyone inappropriately and attacked the investigation as politically motivated. By week’s end, the former staffer who had accused the governor of groping her breast filed a criminal complaint against him and other prosecutors from around the state were weighing evidence contained in Attorney General Letitia James’ report to see if charges are warranted.

Editorial cartoonists also commented on the confusing advice on Covid-19 coming out of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; vaccine mandates being put into place by cities and employers; rising crime and inflation; and freedoms being trampled by Covid-19 and also by Americans resistant to the vaccine.

Cartoons were drawn by Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and A.F. Branco and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate. Several of our regular cartoonists are away on summer vacation.
