Got an early 2000s car? New movie filming in Syracuse seeks specific vehicles

American High

American High is a film production company based out of Syracuse Studios (the former A.V. Zogg Middle School) in Liverpool, N.Y.

A new movie filming in Syracuse is looking for some specific cars to be a part of the production.

“Love in Color,” the upcoming 11th movie from Liverpool-based American High, is set to begin shooting next month with big name producers like Natasha Lyonne (“Russian Doll,” “Orange is the New Black”) and Maya Rudolph (“Saturday Night Live,” “Bridesmaids”). The film will follow an aspiring young artist who’s forced to join her high school track team and uses it as an opportunity to pursue the girl she’s been harboring a long-time crush on, but she soon finds herself falling for an unexpected teammate and discovers what real love feels like.

Some of the characters will need specific vehicles, and the team behind the movie is looking for the following to rent from local owners:

  • mid 2000s green Subaru Outback or Forester
  • early to mid 2000s red VW bug convertible
  • early to mid 2000s orange Honda CRV or Element
  • early to mid 2000s yellow Toyota Camry
  • early to mid 2000s red Mini Cooper
  • early to mid 2000s bright or multicolor or vibrant car
  • new 2020-2021 Ford Bronco
  • early to mid 2000s Land Rover Discovery in pale blue, pale green, or silver

Update: Producers are no longer looking for a hybrid/eco friendly vehicle for the movie.

The vehicles will be needed for 1-3 days of filming between Aug. 9 and Sept. 13. Specific dates and pay rates will depend on the number of days needed for filming.

“Love in Color” will be the feature-length directorial debut from Sammi Cohen (College Humor, PopTV) on a script from Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, who loosely based the story on their own experiences: “They were largely motivated to write something that went beyond the coming out story and depicted the queer joy they wanted to see on screen growing up.”

The cast has not been announced. It’s unclear if Lyonne and Rudolph, who previously worked together on the 2017 short “Cabiria, Charity, Chastity” and the 2020 Netflix special “Sarah Cooper: Everything’s Fine,” will have roles.

“Love in Color” will be produced by Lyonne, Rudolph, and Danielle Renfrew for Animal Pictures, along with Andrew Miano for Depth of Field, Katie Newman for 3Arts, and Jeremy Garelick, Will Phelps and Ryan Bennett for American High.

Filming is scheduled to begin in August. The movie will be released on Hulu on a date to be announced.

“Love in Color” will be American High’s 11th movie shot in Central New York in less than four years. “Plan B,” “The Binge,” “Holly Slept Over,” “Banana Split,” “Big Time Adolescence,” “Looks That Kill” and “The Ultimate Playlist of Noise” were all released over the past 16 months; “Sex Appeal,” “Sid is Dead” and the recently completed Patton Oswalt film “I Love My Dad” are in post-production.
