A new trailer for “The Night House” offers a scary preview of a new horror movie filmed in the Syracuse, N.Y., area.
The highly-anticipated film follows Golden Globe-nominated actress Rebecca Hall (”Christine,” “The Town”) as Beth, an Upstate New York teacher still reeling from the death of her husband and left alone in the home he built for her — a lakefront house in CNY. Nightmares and disturbing visions of a presence in the house torment her as she uncovers strange and disturbing secrets from her husband’s (Evan Jonigkeit) belongings.
David Bruckner (“V/H/S,” “The Ritual”) directs the supernatural thriller, also starring Sarah Goldberg (”Barry”), Vondie Curtis Hall (”Chicago Hope”) and Stacy Martin (”Nymphomaniac”). David S. Goyer (”The Dark Knight”) produced it on a script by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski.
Searchlight Pictures acquired the movie for a reported $12 million after it premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival to strong reviews. “The film’s jump-scares are cruel and aggressive enough to cower you into submission,” IndieWire wrote.
Hall told Deadline last year that she found the script “generally frightening to read,” and told Syfy that she was fascinated with the idea of grief’s effect on the psyche as her character mourns the loss of a husband.
“What would your mind construct to find a reason why? I think that’s a really interesting idea because, personally, I suspect that madness and not being aware of it is probably my deepest fear,” she told Syfy.
“The Night House” was shot throughout Syracuse in the spring of 2019, including scenes at Maxwell’s tavern in Hanover Square and Skaneateles Lake. The production also used the Greater Syracuse Soundstage (formerly known as the nano film hub in DeWitt) and is eligible for the NY State Film Tax Credit program.
“The Night House” will be released in theaters on Aug. 20.
