The Syracuse Stallions’ attempt to win a championship during their first season in The Basketball League fell two games short.
The Stallions were swept in the two-game championship series by the Enid Outlaws, ending a successful debut season for the Syracuse-based club during its first year in a fully professional league. The Stallions competed previously in the American Basketball Association, which is considered a semi-professional league.
Syracuse lost the final game of the season, 120-107. During the championship series, Syracuse was unable to solve the presence of 6-foot-10 Chance Comanche (University of Arizona) in the middle. He averaged 32 points and 12.5 rebounds over the two games.
Syracuse had to play the championship series without Jacquil Taylor (Purdue/Hofstra), a 7-footer who had been the named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, and who seems likely to have given Comache a tougher test in the middle.
Trahson Burrell (University of Memphis) led Syracuse’s effort in the final game of the year with 32 points and 12 rebounds and averaged 32.5 points and 11 rebounds over the two-game series.
The Stallions had garnered attention in recent weeks by putting together a 26-5 record, and were recognized by Mayor Ben Walsh at City Hall. Enid finished the year 30-3.
