Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse running back Sean Tucker is one of 82 preseason candidates for the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation’s top running back.
Tucker ran for 626 yards in nine games last year, the third-highest total by an Orange freshman. Among freshmen, his 69.6 yards per game average was second to only Syracuse all-time leading rusher Joe Morris.
Ten semifinalists will be named in November. That list will be trimmed to three finalists. The award committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient.
The award is named for SMU’s three-time All-American running back. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
