Another wet week in Upstate NY: More rain, storms, floods possible

Flooding in Central New York

Route 5 in the town of Kirkland was closed due to flooding from Oriskany Creek on July 12, 2021.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- There will be no rest for residents of flood zones this week across Upstate New York.

The soggy pattern continues into a second week, with chances of heavy rain in thunderstorms every day through at least Wednesday. Flash flooding is on the table for much of Upstate, especially those areas already water-logged by nearly constant rainy days.

Flash flood watches issued on Sunday have ended, but the weather service cautioned that more could be issued later today as storms develop.

“Parts of the area have already received significant rainfall during the past several days,” the National Weather Service said. “Additional heavy rainfall may cause localized flash flooding, especially poor drainage areas and locations that have very wet soils from recent rains.”

More than 4 inches has fallen in the Oneida County town of Westmoreland in the past week. That’s more than a typical month of July.

Storms are expected this afternoon; they could drop more than an inch of rain quickly, which could lead to localized flooding. There’s also a chance for winds of 40 mph or greater.

Thunderstorms are likely Tuesday and Wednesday; again, some could contain heavy rains and high winds. Those winds could lead to uprooted trees and power outages, especially in wet areas.
