Fireworks celebrate major Covid-19 vaccine milestone (photos)

Geddes, N.Y. — After only one official - and many unofficial - fireworks displays on July Fourth last year, people showed up in masses to the New york State Fairgrounds Tuesday night for a chance to feel the explosions and bright flashes up close.

A series of fireworks displays were planned across the state to celebrate the state reaching 70% of adults with at least one vaccine dose and the end of most pandemic restrictions.

Other locations planning to host shows included downtown Utica, Binghamton University’s M Lot, Jones Beach on Long Island, the Lake Placid Club, Niagara Falls State Park, Nyack Memorial Park, the Rochester Dome Arena, New York Harbor in New York City and the Empire State Plaza in Albany.

The celebration in Syracuse, with the Exposition Center as a backdrop, was to recognize the building’s role as one of Syracuse’s main Covid-19 vaccination sites.

According to fair officials approximately 7,000 people attended here.
