Covid in NY: Hospitalizations up, new cases stay below 400

Albany, N.Y. — Despite an increase Monday, Covid-19 hospitalizations in New York remain at their lowest levels in months.

Hospitalizations rose 33 yesterday to 650. Daily totals in recent weeks have been at points not seen since the fall.

A total of 161 people were in intensive care units with the coronavirus Monday, down two, and 88 were intubated, down four.

The state confirmed 320 new Covid cases yesterday and reported another 55,438 test results. The statewide percentage of people testing positive for the virus was 0.58%.

Another nine people in New York died Monday due to Covid, which brings the statewide death toll to 42,882.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the end of nearly all remaining pandemic rules earlier today after the state reached 70% of adults with at least one dose of a Covid vaccine.

But the state is still far from herd immunity, which Cuomo has said won’t kick in until at least 70% of the total population is fully vaccinated. So far, 49.6% of all New Yorkers have received all required vaccine doses.

In Central New York, the seven-day average of the percentage of people testing positive for the virus was 0.59% Monday, down from 0.64% the day before. The statewide seven-day average was 0.4%, down from 0.41% the previous day.
