Geddes, N.Y. — New York has almost reached a key Covid-19 milestone.

As of today, 69.9% of adults have had at least one dose of a Covid vaccine. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said last week that nearly all remaining pandemic rules will end once that number reaches 70%.

The state is almost certain to reach the milestone Tuesday.

“It doesn’t mean when we hit 70%, it’s over,” Cuomo said today during a press conference at the New York State Fairgrounds in Geddes. “It means it’s working. It means we’re doing well. It also means keep going. It’s not the finish line at 70%, but we’re coming around the last turn on the track and we have to focus.”

Even after 70% of adults in the state have had one shot, millions of New Yorkers will remain unvaccinated. Just half the state’s total population has received all required vaccine doses.

But the pandemic is clearly receding.

Covid hospitalizations in New York fell 13 Sunday to 617. Hospitalizations haven’t been this low since late September.

A total of 163 people were in intensive care units with the coronavirus yesterday, down seven, and 92 were intubated, down three.

The state confirmed 320 new Covid cases Sunday and reported another 61,634 test results. The statewide percentage of people testing positive for the virus was 0.52%.

Another seven people in New York died Sunday due to Covid, which brings the statewide death toll to 42,872.

In Central New York, the seven-day average of the percentage of people testing positive for the virus was 0.64% Sunday, down from 0.68% the day before. The statewide seven-day average was 0.41%, down from 0.42% the previous day.

Covid hospitalizations, new cases and new deaths all remain at their lowest levels in months.
