Syracuse breaks high temperature record

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The temperature hit 92 degrees in Syracuse today, breaking the record for May 20.

That’s the third-earliest day of the year when Syracuse hit at least 92 since records began in 1902.

Today’s peak temperature came at 3:48 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The previous record for the date was 90 degrees, set in 1962.

The normal high temperature for May 20 is 71 degrees.

Today’s 92 degrees didn’t feel as hot as that temperature would in the middle of July, when the humidity is higher. The humidity at 4 p.m. was a relatively dry 22%.

Temperatures will be well above normal again Friday, but probably not record-breaking. The forecast is for a high of 90 degrees; the record is 96, set in 1977.

The heat will ease over the weekend, with highs on Saturday in the mid 80s and on Sunday in the high 70s.
