Update Friday: Man who shot himself after a nearly 12-hour standoff in Oswego County park dies
Original report
Mexico, N.Y. — A nearly 12-hour standoff between a man and police that caused some Oswego County schools to go into lockdown ended Tuesday when the man shot himself, state police said.
The man is in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital, said Trooper Jack Keller, a New York State police spokesman. The man was initially taken to Oswego Hospital, he said.
Police were called to Mexico Community Park in the village of Mexico around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday to speak with the man, who was believed suicidal and possibly armed, according to Oswego County 911 dispatchers.
The man was in his car in the park threatening to kill himself, Keller said.
The Mexico Academy and Central School District was put on lockout, Dr. Donna Runner, superintendent of the district, announced on the district’s website.
The main campus of the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation, formerly known as Oswego County BOCES, was put on lockout “as a precautionary measure,” according to an alert posted on CiTi’s website.
CiTi, at 179 County Route 64, is about 2 miles west of the park.
