New York — Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans to wait awhile longer before deciding whether to open the New York State Fair in 2021.

The fair was canceled in 2020 thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. Cuomo has said he’d love to see the fair happen this year if the pandemic is under control and the event can run safely.

“Nobody wants to open the state fair more than me,” he said today during a press conference in New York City. “It is a fantastic facility. It’s a phenomenal asset for the entire state.”

The Covid numbers can change rapidly, Cuomo added. The situation in a few months could look drastically different than it does now.

Cuomo said he does not want to announce the fair will happen and then have to cancel it if the pandemic gets worse again. Waiting a bit longer will lower the risk of that happening.

He did say he believes the worst of the pandemic is over if the state continues to vaccinate and people take the proper precautions.

“All we can do is study the science and the data and the metrics and as the numbers come down, then we relax more and more regulations,” Cuomo said.
