New York horse and auto racing events can open up to fans starting April 22, for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that venues like Watkins Glen, Oswego Speedway and the Saratoga Race Course can have spectators limited to 20% of capacity, similar to Covid-19 restrictions for other sporting events in the state. Attendees must show proof of vaccination or a recent negative test prior to entry; face masks, social distancing, and health screenings are also required.

According to the Times Union, motorsports and horse race tracks had previously been excluded from reopening guidance for sports and other venues, though they were allowed to operate without fans last year.

New York Racing Association President and CEO Dave O’Rourke told the Albany newspaper that ticket information for Saratoga and Belmont Park will be announced after the NYRA reviews the guidelines and protocols. Officials are optimistic that as more New Yorkers get vaccinated, capacity may be higher than 20% by the time Saratoga opens for its summer meet on Thursday, July 15.

Oswego Speedway is scheduled to open for its 70th season on May 8. Watkins Glen International, which can now hold up to 7,780 fans (out of 38,900 capacity), recently began its 2021 season and has major events coming up like Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen in June and NASCAR’s Go Bowling at The Glen in August.

Cuomo said more guidance will be released for horse and auto racing events shortly, according to WETM.

The governor also announced new curfew rules Wednesday, allowing bars and restaurants to stay open until midnight starting Monday April 19. Catered events like weddings and other celebrations will be allowed to run until 1 a.m.

Note: An earlier version of this story said spectators will be allowed beginning April 23. Fans will be allowed at 20% capacity beginning April 22.
