Syracuse, N.Y. -- CBA freshman wide receiver Syair Torrence may or may not someday play football for Syracuse University, but his initial response to the school’s offer of a scholarship to him on Wednesday is one that will linger for a long time.

““I was crying when my coach (Casey Brown) told me. Then after he told me I called my mom, and then I was just crying to her, too,” Torrence said Thursday. “I was happy and emotional at the same time. What hit me was I live on the south side of Syracuse and I got an offer from a D-1 school. That’s what really hit me. I didn’t think a D-1 school would offer me this early. I thought it was going to be next year.”

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Torrence said he’s also received initial interest from Baylor and Colorado State. In four games for CBA this season, he’s grabbed 35 passes for 347 yards and five touchdowns.

Torrence said he’s been a long-time fan of the Orange. He enjoys watching film of SU legend Jim Brown.

“It’s a good program. I used to love watching, I still do love watching Syracuse,” he said. “I used to go to the games. My favorite game was against Louisville in Syracuse back when (Cardinals QB) Lamar Jackson was playing (in 2016). That game, it was just a fun time for me to watch.”

Torrence’s older brother, Symir, recently announced he is transferring from the Marquette basketball team to the Orange starting next season. Symir will have three seasons of eligibility remaining at SU, so he won’t overlap with Syair’s potential career there.

Syair said he expects Symir to give him feedback about the school.

“Whatever his decision is, I’m going to be there for it regardless,” Symir said. “I want him to go somewhere where it’s going to benefit him the best. Wherever that is, I’m going to support him regardless.”
