STATE COLLEGE — The Penn State bye week falls neatly at the halfway mark of the 2021 season. The No. 7 Nittany Lions have played six games. There are six left in the regular season. It’s a good time to take stock of where things stand.

The 5-1 Nittany Lions enter the break after a dispiriting loss at No. 2 Iowa and with plenty of questions about the status of quarterback Sean Clifford. For now, though, we are going to take a look back at the first half of the season with the six biggest surprises for Penn State through the first six weeks of the year.
