Affordable senior housing development planned for Harrisburg

An affordable senior housing development in Harrisburg can now move forward.

Harrisburg City Council approved the preliminary and final land development plan for Bethel Village on Sixth and Herr Streets last week. Plans call a one four-story building to be built on five existing parcels at 1008-1012 N. Sixth St. and 429-441 Herr St. and include 49 low income/affordable housing units for people 62 and older.

The property is currently an unused commercial parking lot that was established in the mid-2000s but has been vacant since 2013 when the zoning board denied permission for it to continued to be used as a commercial parking lot.

There will be four on-site parking spaces and there are expected to be 25 more parking spaces off site. The building must have at least 15 off-site parking spaces within four hundred feet of the property in order to obtain an certificate of occupancy.

City Council President Wanda Williams had concerns about some of the off-site parking spaces that require uphill walking across busy streets but said she is excited about the project.

“I’m excited for this because I know senior citizens need this,” she said at the meeting.

The development partners are the Harrisburg Housing Authority, Paladin Development, RB Development, Gardner Capital and Bethel AME Church.
