COVID-19 hospitalizations rise by 50 over weekend in Pa.: update

COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to rise in Pennsylvania, with 404 hospitalized as of early Monday. That’s an increase of more than 50 since Friday, and up from 260 at the beginning of last week.

Of those, 86 were in intensive care, another significant increase from last week.

Pennsylvania’s rolling average of daily hospitalizations had fallen steadily for more than two months, bottoming out at 265 on July 20. It has since risen to 297, according to Pennsylvania Department of Health data.

Pennsylvania’s rolling average of daily new cases is also rising, with the state registering 556 new cases on Monday. The rolling average stood at 511 as of July 24, according to Johns Hopkins. That’s up from 161 in early July.

The number hospitalized with COVID-19 remains far below Pennsylvania’s peak of more than 6,000 in late December.

COVID-19 deaths in Pennsylvania have yet to show any upward trend. The state registered 7 deaths since Friday, bringing its total to 27,827. Since deaths typically occur weeks after infection and hospitalization, they lag behind surges in new cases.

About 62% of Pennsylvanians 18 or older are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the 21st highest percentage in the country.

When looking at the number of adult Pennsylvanians who have received at least one dose of vaccine, 77.4%, Pennsylvania ranks eighth, according to tracking by The New York Times.

The number of doses being given in the state has inched upward in recent weeks. The seven-day average of daily doses stood at 27,650 as of Sunday, up from a low of about 19,000 on July 10, according to Johns Hopkins.

About 14.4 million vaccine doses have been administered in Pennsylvania, which has 12.8 million people. When looking at the full population, about 52% of Pennsylvanians are fully vaccinated.

Vermont leads the U.S. in fully vaccinated adults with 77%. Alabama and Mississippi have the least, about 43%.
