Holman’s Bar & Grill, the beloved 90-year-old dive bar and grill, will reopen later this year under new ownership, Portland Mercury was first to report.

Known for its greasy-spoon menu, build-your-own weekend Bloody Mary bar and anything-goes back patio, Holman’s was first opened by the family behind the Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard funeral home of the same name way back in 1933.

But the bar has sat empty since the start of the pandemic, a source of frequent questions from former regulars.

According to the Mercury report, Warren Boothby and Marcus Archambeault — a duo who have refurbished other essential old Portland dive bars including Sandy Hut The Alibi, The Vern — have taken over the space and plan to scrub the floors, polish the bar and restock the whiskey selection over the next few months. The famous “meal wheel,” which patrons could spin each night to win a free dinner (including the restaurant’s signature giant chicken-fried steaks), will remain.

Holman’s Bar & Grill hopes to reopen later this year at 15 S.E. 28th Ave., just down from Fifty Licks and the Laurelhurst Theater.
