Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Calls on Illinois Congressional Delegation to Reject the Elimination of The State and Local Tax Deduction

October 3, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi released the following statement in response to the provision in the Republican tax plan which would eliminate the deductibility of state and local taxes:

"While many elements of tax reform may be debatable, the importance of the State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction to the people of Illinois is not. That's why I'm calling on all my colleagues representing our state to join me in rejecting the current proposal to raise taxes on working families in Illinois by eliminating this essential deduction.

Working families across the state depend on the SALT deduction to ensure that they are not double-taxed to pay for state and local services. Thousands of taxpayers in my district use the SALT deduction to save thousands of dollars per year. The average resident of Cook County saves $4,176 through this deduction while Kane County residents save $5,048. In DuPage County, the average taxpayer saves $6,637 annually through the SALT deduction.

I call on all my Illinois colleagues to reject the elimination of the SALT deduction. Failing to do so will result in a tax increase on thousands of working families across Illinois."
