BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WWMT) – Social media users on Reddit and TikTok have been submitting applications for jobs. Not because they want the job, but in solidarity for striking union workers.

Reddit users on the subreddit r/antiwork banded together to spam Kellogg Company with fake applications after the company announced it would be hiring permanent replacements to fill the positions left by striking workers with the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union.

“We have posted for permanent replacement roles in each cereal plant location and our online hiring process is fully operational. Interest in the roles has been strong at all four plants, as expected,” Kellogg spokesperson Kris Bahner said.

A Reddit posted links to the Kellogg Job portal where 1,400 jobs are open at four cereal plants across the county, including in Battle Creek.

“It’s time to clog their toilet of an application pipeline,” the Reddit post read.

A TikTok user coded a program to autofill the resume and another Reddit user created a program that automates the process for filling out an application.

Many people on social media have called for a boycott of Kellogg products while the workers are on strike.

President Joe Biden on Friday said he was “deeply troubled” by Kellogg’s decision to replace the striking workers.

Kellogg union workers have been on strike since Oct. 5.

Kellogg announced in November that it would start hiring permanent replacement workers. The company also said Dec. 7 that it was looking to hire permeant replacements for the striking union workers.

Kellogg also said in a statement that no plans to return to the negotiation table have been set as of Dec. 7.

The negotiations between Kellogg and the union have hinged on an issue regarding a two-tier pay system.
