What is an Advanced Manufacturing Technician?

The Advanced Manufacturing Technician Program (AMT) is a two-year (five semesters) Associate Degree that combines cutting-edge curriculum and paid working experience with learning highly sought-after business principles and best practices of world-class manufacturers. It is more than a job, it is a pathway to a career.

AMT is more than just sitting in the classroom. The college and the manufacturer work closely together to enhance your learning. In addition to gaining skill mastery in the educational portion of the program, you will learn about the culture of manufacturing through manufacturing workshops such as safety culture, Lean Manufacturing, problem solving, etc. Opportunities to increase communication and presentation skills as well as develop work ethic are also available. You earn money while attending college and gain priceless work experience with global and local manufacturers.

Length of Program

You can earn an associate degree in two years if you maintain full-time status.

KY FAME is part of FAME USA. Those enrolled into the FAME Program will start a work/study program to earn an associate degree and certification as an Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) in 18 months. FAME Students attend classes two days a week (8 hours each day) and will work at least 24 hours a week (8 hours or more each day for three days) for a local, sponsoring employer – being paid a competitive wage.

What will my week look like?

You will attend class two full days at Jefferson and you'll also work 24 hours each week at a sponsor's facility. Don't worry, You will be paid a competitive wage and you're getting valuable hands-on work experience.

How do I apply?

Am I eligible to apply?

• Are you a high school senior with an expected graduation date of May or June or a recent high school graduate?
• Did you score?
• 19 or higher on the math portion of the ACT?
• 18 or higher on the English portion of the ACT?
• 20 or higher on the reading portion of the ACT?
• Do you have a sincere interest in pursuing a career in manufacturing?

Because this is a selective admissions program, applying to the AMT program is done in two steps:

• Step 1: Complete the AMT application online. You will also need to upload your high school transcript and any college transcripts.  Your expected graduation date from your High School guidance counselor if still in High School. A short essay (500 words or less) expressing your interest in working as an advanced manufacturing technician and your goal for applying to the program.
• Step 2: Apply to Jefferson Community and Technical College using the college's free application.  You will need your:
  • Social Security number,
  • An active email address,
  • Name and address of your high school,
  • The name and address of any colleges you have attended.
  • Don't forget, if you need to apply for financial aid, you'll need to fill out your FAFSA as early as possible.
  • All financial aid, grants, scholarships, and loans start with the FAFSA.

What happens after I apply?

If you qualify for the AMT program, you will be invited to an interview with area manufacturers and will be contacted if you have been selected for the program. If you don't qualify or get selected for the AMT program, you'll still be eligible for other Jefferson open admissions programs.

What if I am already a Jefferson Student?

If you already attend Jefferson Community and Technical College, you will need to complete the Records Release form to allow your records to be shared with the KYFAME employers.

Is the AMT really for me?

If you enjoy technology, tools, working with your hands, and solving big problems, we encourage you to apply. The AMT isn't for everybody, and application to the program is competitive. But for those who are accepted, it's the start of an excellent career.

What degree will I earn?

You will earn your Associates in Applied Science in Industrial Maintenance Technology Advanced Manufacturing Technician Track. It'll take you five semesters to finish, and it is comprised of 68 to 71 AMT credit hours.

What will I learn?

• You will be covering topics like electricity, robotics, fluid power, mechanics, fabrication, 
• You will also work in manufacturing core exercises like safety culture, visual workplace organization, lean manufacturing, problem-solving and machine reliability.
• Other exercises will cover the six professional behaviors: work attendance, initiative, diligence, interpersonal relations, teamwork, and verbal and written communication.
