Workshop Summary
The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) program “offers the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization” (CAREER solicitation, 20-525).
This workshop will introduce you to the CAREER program and critical differences between CAREER and other NSF proposal mechanisms. There will be plenty of time for questions.

Goals of the Workshop
The goals of this workshop are:
- Learn about the NSF CAREER program.
- Understand the key differences between CAREER and other proposal mechanisms.
- A brief introduction to NSF and the merit review process.
- Participants should leave this workshop with the information needed to apply strategically to the CAREER solicitation.
Eligibility
Enrollment is free and is limited to 20 participants per workshop.
Priority is given to current pre-tenure HSI faculty and staff. Applicants should be aware that the selection process strives for diverse geographical and institutional representation. The selection decision is final and summary reviews are not provided.

- The essential components of a competitive CAREER proposal.

This workshop will familiarize faculty with the CAREER program at NSF, including key differences between CAREER proposals and standard core program proposals and considerations about timing a CAREER submission.

Workshop Speakers
Dr. Karen Mabry, Associate Professor of Biology, New Mexico State University.
Karen Mabry earned her Ph.D. in Animal Behavior from the University of California, Davis. Her research program at NMSU focuses on the behavior and ecology of animals in environments that vary across space and time; much of this work has been supported by NSF awards, including a CAREER award. From 2017-2020, she was a Program Officer in the Directorate for Biological Sciences at the National Science Foundation, where she managed the merit review process for the Animal Behavior Program and interacted with researchers concerning all aspects of proposal submission and review.
