The Therapeutic Landscapes Network‘s primary focus is gardens in healthcare facilities. These landscapes are designed for a specific population, often with an specific purpose (e.g., encouraging seniors to get outside for exercise, sunlight and fresh air; enabling children to “blow off steam” during a hospital visit; helping patients learn to use a wheelchair on outdoor surfaces). They are (or should be) designed using evidence-based design (EBD), design based on the most current research available.

Gardens in this section are listed in alphabetical order by name of facility. We are raising funds to implement a map so that gardens can be searched geographically. Donations toward that effort are welcome! In the meantime, use the search box at the top of any page for specific locations (city, state, country) as well as keywords (e.g., “children’s” or “Alzheimer’s, “rooftop” or “atrium.”)

Adding and maintaining all of this information requires time and funds. We believe that we are providing a valuable resource. If you agree, please consider making a donation to the Therapeutic Landscapes Network.

Western Health and Social Care Trust
Enniskillen, Northern Ireland
“Set among wooded hills, meadows & lakes, the scheme represents a genuine integration of building & landscape in an environmentally & socially sustainable design. Natural materials have been selected to reflect the local vernacular, including a natural stone base, extensive use of wood & glass, & pitched roofs. A linear garden, running the length of the building, has the dual purpose of bringing natural light & the richly landscaped campus into the heart of the hospital, & provides the main organising feature of the hospital.”

Thea and James Stoneman Healing Garden
Boston, MA, USA
Click here to read an article about the healing garden. Here is an excerpt from the article about the garden:
The Thea and James Stoneman Healing Garden, made possible by a gift from the James M. Stoneman Charitable Fund, will be a two-story green oasis located on the third floor of the new facility on the corner of Jimmy Fund Way and Brookline Avenue.

This indoor sanctuary, which will overlook Joslin Park, will consist of pathways with garden seating, natural stone walls, colorful flowers that change seasonally, and a canopy of tall greenery that envelopes visitors in a lush, serene environment.

“Our patients and families requested a living healing garden, but with a limited outdoor landscape, it wasn’t realistic,” says Wendy Gettleman, Dana-Farber’s senior director of Planning, Design, and Construction. “So we did the next best thing and put it inside.”

The healing garden will also contain a 20-by-28-foot glass conservatory without plants, so immune-compromised patients can enjoy the surrounding elements free of allergen or health concerns.

Demelza House Children’s Hospice
Demelza Garden
Kent, UK
Winner of the silver-gilt at Chelsea in 2009; relocated to Kent
Designer: Jo Thompson (www.jothompson-garden-design.co.uk)
Sight, smell, even taste are the normal senses associated with gardens but it is hearing that is accentuated in this garden, designed for the children’s hospice charity Demelza. Gentle, musical sounds infiltrate the garden, reflecting the importance of music in bringing happiness into the lives of terminally ill children. A water harp plays quietly in one corner: this metal structure set in a low pool is strung with stainless steel wires, which create soothing sounds as water plays down them. A Japanese Demelza sui-kin-kutsu, an underground water chamber, introduces an invisible, mysterious echoing sound, while aluminium chimes give children the opportunity to make their own music. Silver Betula pendula, inspired by a grove at Merriments Gardens in East Sussex, is underplanted with a colour scheme of cool blues and greens. This gradually develops in intensity until it finally explodes in a riot of bright oranges, yellows and reds using plants such as new red Iris ‘County Town Red’ and Geum ‘Princess Juliana’.

Note that fundraising for a new Oncology Healing Garden is also underway. From the Harrison Foundation’s August 2010 newsletter:
Kitsap County resident Mark Epstein of ESA Adolfson has been selected to design Harrison’s new Oncology Healing Garden. Epstein is recognized nationally for his work creating therapeutic garden designs. Harrison’s garden will be located on a first-floor rooftop adjacent to the inpatient oncology unit on the Bremerton campus. Planning for the garden space – which will serve as reflective place of solace and healing for patients and their families – is underway with implementation slated for later this fall or next spring (pending progress on other planned campus renovations). The garden is being funded by community donors through the Harrison Medical Center Foundation. For more information or to make a donation, call (360) 744-6760. Here’s a review of the garden from yelp.com:
Perhaps Howard Ulfelder is not the name you would associate with the most restful place in Boston, but it’s right up there in every sense of the words. Created as a serene respite for cancer patients and their families, this urban spot has a magnificent view of the river, generous seating, plentiful greenery at all times of the year, gentle watercourses and because of its location, a kind of melancholy beauty that might just suit your mid-day mood.. Since everyone in the world is the family of a cancer patient, don’t be shy about entering. Of course because most people are indeed shy, and because cancer patients don’t seem to have a lot of time for shilly-shallying around on the roof, you may be the only person there. Dreading a colonoscopy? Come early. Come after.

From a 2009 World Interior Design Network article:
“…the 4,786 square feet healing garden features shaded outdoor gathering spaces and paths interwoven with lush hummingbird and butterfly gardens coupled with water features. The multi-sensory garden is visible from many of the hospital’s patient rooms in the open air courtyard. A seamless entrance and open views to the healing garden have been made possible by remodeling the hospital lobby. The healing garden complements the original art displayed throughout the medical facility and the homely design of the private patient rooms. The garden is expected to act as a soothing, calming place both for patients and visitors, says Jean Knoedler, hospital vice president and administrator.”

The courtyard’s contrast of forms and colors can be viewed from a glass corridor that connects the original hospital to the new addition. A second courtyard is used as a rest area and for family gathering. This courtyard has stepping stones set in moss and a dense perimeter planting which creates a serene, relaxing environment.”

Recipient of the 2010 Design & Health International Academy Award for Sustainable Design. Judges’ remarks: “The design approach of this outstanding project focused on the interconnection between nature, health and wellbeing, reflecting and making use of the stunning local backdrop of wooded forests, panoramic landscapes and views of the water.”

“We tried to design the building so it’s transparent and connects back to the forest and the landscape,” he said. “The building breathes and infuses daylight, reflecting the changing light conditions… It also embodies the spirit of the Peninsula and the sense of community identity.”
– Allyn Stellmacher, design partner at ZGF’s Seattle office

” The green features include the preservation of more than half of the site’s vegetation and replanting of the disturbed areas with indigenous plants, a “green buffer” that reduces visual and noise pollution, a stormwater-catchment system that filters the water back to the wetlands, a healing garden that uses recycled water, and nature trails. Inside, the extensive use of daylight creates a more energy-efficient space; other energy controls were also implemented. The project used many green materials, including low-VOC paints, sealants and adhesives.”- Excerpt from article in the Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal

Note: This is one of the best examples of both a children’s garden and a rooftop garden in the healthcare setting.
Here’s a description from the website (link above):
Just outside St. Louis Children’s Hospital’s eighth floor, patients have a unique setting to enjoy time with nature, a private walk or quiet reflection. The 8,000-square-foot Olson Family Garden , an interactive rooftop oasis designed expressly for children and families who want a place for privacy, solace and healing. In addition to a variety of places to sit and rest, including a swing, benches and small coves, children enjoy crafts, puppet shows and performances by storytellers. Other features include waterfalls, winding paths and steppingstones that take garden visitors from fountains to flowerbeds to ponds filled with goldfish and views of nearby Forest Park. According to hospital chaplain Rev. Connie Madden, the garden represents a place for families and staff to “re-center.” “I’ve discovered that the garden works like a sanctuary,” she explains. “People go there to feel safe and less harried.” Children who can’t go outdoors enjoy the garden’s sculptures, fountains and plants from windows in the newly renovated Child Life Services Center, an educational facility that offers a child-friendly playroom, a teen lounge and school room. The garden is also lit at night, and has featured special decorations during the holidays.
