The Anderson University (SC) chapter is considering using the PRSSA honor cords at graduations. I'm curious about what standards other chapters use for determining which students should receive the honor cords.

Thanks.

Good morning, Robert.

I’ve been the faculty adviser for California State University, Fullerton, and this is actually the first time I’ve heard of honor cords for PRSSA.  We give members the option of purchasing stoles, but have not used cords.

Here is what I’ve found from other chapters:

  • Grand Valley State University – Based on participation
    • Attend at least four meetings
    • Attend at least one agency tour
    • Write a blog
    • Volunteer
    • Donate to be a Rose
    • Contribute to a fundraiser
    • Bring a friend to a meeting
    • Attend an external event

  • University of Colorado Boulder – Based on academics and participation
    • Serve at least one academic year on the student executive board or as a committee chair.
    • Serve the chapter honorably during his/her membership in CU’s chapter.
    • Represent the chapter professionally at events outside of CU (i.e. PRSSA national conference, Leadership Rally, PRSA Colorado events, etc.).
    • Be recognized by other APRD faculty as an outstanding student in strategic communications/PR.
    • Achieve an overall GPA of at least 3.75.

National promotes the purchase of graduation honor cords in the official PRSSA color of navy blue, but I am unable to find any guidance on standards for qualification.  Seems like there should be guidance to standardize the awarding of these cords across the chapters.  I’ll dig into this.

Thank you for raising this issue!

Ken

Hi all.

Find it also in their website with potential vendors and in the PRSSA chapter packet issued to chapter leaders: https://www.prsa.org/prssa/chapter-firm-resources/tools-for-chapter-leaders

I did a quick Google search and lots of chapters do it, but not many have requirements out there which I'm sure is what you found too Robert.

Looks like in the Google archive there are some posts in this group too - I just searched by keyword: https://groups.google.com/g/prssa-chapter-presidents/c/0xf61wYluSs

Since our college offers GPA based honor cords for our majors already, we opted to boost participation in order to earn ours at the chapter level. For some context on one of those: "Be A Rose" is a nonprofit we partner annually with and try for 100% donation participation annually. Most members give $1-5 via Venmo to check this box off. It goes to local schools and homeless women for menstrual hygiene items. Usually some PRSA members will match the student donation to make it a group effort.

Students don't have to do all of these, there is a point system for each and total points senior year gets them a cord. We order through our college that already has a vendor.

Please join our FB group you will get more participation and variety of answers! I'm not sure how accurate the Google group adviser list is anymore. I can't think of the last time something was posted in here before this. Join us! The link is here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/881630808975220/?ref=share

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance thru email if that is easier.

Hi all,

At American U, we give to all the seniors as a gift.
Actually, it’s my gift as their advisor.  It’s generally anywhere from 10-12 students.

My rationale is that students spent money joining and cared enough about being a member.   They are always very grateful.

Hi All. At Wayne State we use navy blue cords for general members (see here: https://www.amazon.com/Graduation-Honor-Cord-School-Available/dp/B00I9PQSPY?th=1).

Executive board members ordered navy blue sashes with their position and graduation year engraved on them. We were never sure if this is the PRSSA national standard, but this is what our chapter has done for the past few years.

At Champlain College, all of the seniors receive the honors cord as a gift that I purchase from the PRSSA website.

At Temple, the chapter buys PRSSA graduation stoles for all graduating seniors.
