Hello all thank you in advance for your patience.  I am VERY new to lidar processing.  I am a field forester by trade, trying out new things.  I took a scan with a GeoSlam Horizon and geolocated the scan with the adjust control points feature.

When I load into QGIS, it says it is missing its projection, and when I set to Arizona Central, it is exactly where it is supposed to be.  My friend is going to help me with the tree separation in lidR but we cannot find a way to set the projection.

It looks like I should be able to do this with las2las?  I am also open to learning how to do the tree analysis in lastools but I am climbing a steep learning curve!

First of all, don't worry about raising your doubts in this forum because the objective is precisely that we all learn from the problems and solutions that others raise with their own data. The advantage of this is that none of us are born experts, and the more knowledge is shared the more it grows. I can assure you that the learning curve (and I have been teaching my students with LAStools for many years) is very smooth and the truth is that the program allows large projects.

My first recommendation is that you always associate the projection system within the LAS/LAZ file itself to avoid later problems. Effectively this is done through LAS2LAS and particularly for me the most comfortable is to use the EPSG of the desired CRS. If you want to check if the file has the system well defined, besides being able to use QGIS to check it, you can use lasinfo that gives you a complete information of the data.

If you want send an example file (in LAZ format to reduce the size) and what would be your desired projection system (EPSG code) and I will send you the corresponding commands and a brief explanation.

Greetings and we continue advancing,

Jorge Delgado

Thank you.  I figured it out.  The coorinate system was set correctly actually, the culprit was trying to line it up with points that were in a different coordinate system!  Rookie mistake!  That's how we learn though......

Are there any good self guided tutorials available to learn these skills?

Martin wrote an extensive set of help files (.txt) for each routine. They include multiple examples of how to set switches In addition you have the history of this list, where many questions are dealt with at length.

Dear Eli,

Actually, the Rapidlasso web page is moving into a new domain (from rapidlasso.com to rapidlasso.de), but in rapidlasso.com you have some tutorials and videos.ç

Dear Eli,
the "old" rapidlasso page will be there for a while but step by step we move the content to the new page.
In the meanwhile we have extracted all the tutorials to a single PDF for offline use:
